September 2025 is shaping up to be one of the most challenging months for London’s transport network in recent memory. A combination of large-scale engineering works, weekend closures, and late-night maintenance will disrupt services across almost every major line of the Underground, Overground, Elizabeth line and DLR. The situation is further complicated by a series of strikes organised by the RMT union, which are expected to bring entire sections of the network to a standstill for several consecutive days.
For millions of Londoners, this means longer commutes, crowded replacement bus services and the prospect of last-minute travel changes. Tourists arriving in the capital will also face unexpected difficulties, especially when travelling to and from key hubs such as Heathrow, Stratford, and Wembley during major events. Businesses, theatres, sports venues and cultural institutions warn of serious losses, as the closures coincide with peak autumn activity. With both maintenance and industrial action overlapping, the month ahead is likely to test the resilience of London’s transport infrastructure and its passengers more than at any time since the pandemic. This is reported by The WP Times, citing MyLondon.

What Passengers Should Expect
This September, almost every part of London’s rail and Underground system will experience closures. Some are late-evening maintenance suspensions, others are full weekend blockades. With strike action layered on top, the effect is city-wide disruption:
- Night Tube services on the Central and Piccadilly lines are especially hit, leaving night workers and late-night travellers with limited options.
- West London faces multiple Elizabeth line and District line closures, especially around Ealing Broadway.
- North and East London are heavily affected by Overground works, particularly Hackney, Chingford, Enfield, and New Cross branches.
- South London travellers will see repeated closures on the Windrush line (New Cross Gate ↔ Crystal Palace/West Croydon) and Surrey Quays ↔ Clapham Junction.
Businesses in hospitality and events are bracing for cancellations and lost revenue, with major concerts at Wembley and Tottenham Hotspur Stadium scheduled in September. TfL defends the timing, saying the works are essential to maintain reliability, but commuters remain frustrated after a summer of strikes and closures.
- Check TfL’s journey planner daily, as schedules can change.
- Allow extra time — journeys may take up to 40% longer during closures.
- Use alternatives: buses, walking routes, cycling, Elizabeth line (when open).
- Avoid central hubs (Oxford Circus, Liverpool Street, King’s Cross) during peak disruption.
- Plan ahead for events: football matches, concerts, and festivals will coincide with closures.
