Public support for US President Donald Trump has continued to erode, according to a new nationwide survey by NBC News Decision Desk, with economic pressures and declining confidence among key voter groups contributing to the downward trend. The poll was conducted via SurveyMonkey and cited by The WP Times.

According to the poll, 42% of respondents approve of Trump’s job performance, while 58% disapprove. NBC News notes this is a three-point drop since April, when approval stood at 45%, reinforcing a gradual decline over the course of 2025 rather than a single abrupt swing.

The survey also shows a shift in the strength of sentiment. The share of Americans who strongly approve of Trump has fallen to 21%, down from 26% in April. By contrast, the proportion who strongly disapprove has edged up to 44%, from 42% earlier this year, suggesting opposition is not only holding but hardening at the strongest end of the scale.

NBC News poll shows Trump’s approval falling to 42% as economic pressure weighs on voters

Economic concerns remain central. NBC News reports that a majority of Americans believe the country is moving in the wrong direction, with the economy continuing to rank among the leading public worries. Respondents cite inflation and the cost of everyday living as the main pressures, describing impacts that show up in routine choices — including grocery spending and seasonal expenses — rather than in abstract indicators.

NBC News also highlights signs of weakening intensity of support inside Republican-aligned groups. Among respondents who identify more with the Republican Party than with the MAGA movement, the share who are strong Trump supporters now stands at 35%, down from 38% in April.

Approval remains notably higher among those who identify as MAGA Republicans, with 70% approving of Trump’s performance. However, even within this core group, the poll records a marked decline: approval has fallen by eight percentage points, from 78% in April, representing the largest drop reported among the key blocs described in the survey.

The poll was conducted from 20 November to 8 December, surveying more than 20,000 adults aged 18 and over, including people not registered to vote. NBC News reports a margin of error of 1.9 percentage points, indicating a high level of statistical precision for a national snapshot.
