Newcastle Airport has unveiled its largest ever flight schedule, marking a major milestone in its £60 million expansion. The airport is set to welcome six million passengers this year, boosted by the launch of 19 new routes to destinations including Lisbon, Porto, Nice, Palermo, and Preveza. Returning services will connect passengers to Berlin, Copenhagen, and Enfidha, among others. Airlines easyJet and Jet2 will operate the new routes, offering seasonal flights from March through November. Leon McQuaid, director of Aviation Development, said: “This investment is delivering exciting new routes and significant economic benefits to the North East, including 130 direct jobs and support for 1,200 UK roles.” With over 750 flights planned, the airport anticipates a 10% increase in passengers this half-term and aims to handle nine million passengers by 2040, alongside upgraded terminal facilities, security areas, and a larger departures lounge. This is reported by The WP Times, citing the Newcastle Airport.

Expanded Flight Network Boosts Travel Options

Newcastle Airport’s expansion introduces flights to some of Europe’s most popular destinations. New routes include Lisbon and Porto in Portugal, Nice in France, Palermo in Italy, and Preveza in Greece. Returning routes connect to Berlin, Copenhagen, and Enfidha, Tunisia. easyJet will operate flights to Nice from March 2026, Malta in summer, and Faro between March and October. Jet2 will launch services to Preveza in May and Palermo from May with weekly summer flights. The airport has also announced new easyJet routes to Lisbon and Rome Fiumicino starting June 22 and March 30, respectively, operating Mondays and Fridays.

Passenger Growth and Economic Impact

The airport expects 120,000 passengers this half-term, representing a 10% rise compared to last year. Over 750 flights will serve destinations including Alicante, Antalya, Dubai, and Tenerife, with ski destinations Chambery, Grenoble, and Geneva also attracting families. According to Leon McQuaid, “Lisbon is a brand-new destination from Newcastle Airport and one we’ve been keen to deliver for the region on the back of strong customer demand and feedback.” The £60 million investment will upgrade terminal facilities, including new check-in desks, self-service bag drops, expanded seating, toilets, food and drink outlets, and a larger international arrivals hall.

Terminal Upgrades Enhance Passenger Experience

The three-storey terminal expansion adds a new security search area, additional check-in counters, and a larger departure lounge. Facilities will now feature more seating, toilets, and dining options. International arrivals will benefit from a revamped baggage hall, designed to improve passenger flow. These enhancements support the airport’s long-term goal of welcoming nine million passengers annually by 2040 while offering a seamless travel experience for both leisure and business travelers.

Airlines and Seasonal Highlights

easyJet’s summer schedule includes Lisbon, Rome, Malta, and Faro, while Jet2 focuses on Palermo and Preveza. Seasonal services align with peak travel periods from March to November.
