UK high streets are facing another accelerated retreat from bricks-and-mortar banking as Santander confirms plans to close 44 bank branches across the UK in 2026 and early 2027. The programme places 291 jobs at risk and reflects a broader shift in customer behaviour, with millions of Britons now relying on mobile and online banking for everyday transactions. The closures form part of Santander’s UK-wide branch network restructuring, affecting communities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, reports The WP Times.

Santander says the closures reflect long-term changes in customer behaviour rather than short-term cost cutting. According to the bank, the majority of routine transactions are now carried out digitally, reducing footfall in many branches. To mitigate the impact, Santander plans to replace closed branches with Community Bankers, operating from Santander Local sites or shared Banking Hubs, offering limited face-to-face services such as cash support, account queries and basic advice.

However, consumer groups warn that the loss of full-service branches disproportionately affects older customers, people without reliable internet access and small businesses that rely on in-person banking. The closures also add to concerns about “banking deserts” in parts of the UK, where residents may be left with no local branch at all.

What Santander customers can do next as UK bank branches close

Santander is advising customers affected by the closures to identify alternative local banking options ahead of time, including the nearest Santander Local, Banking Hub or participating Post Office, where basic services such as cash withdrawals and account support will continue to be available. For many communities, these locations are expected to become the primary point of access once branches close.

Customers who do not currently use online or mobile banking are also being encouraged to register in advance. The bank says early registration allows customers time to set up security credentials, test digital services and seek assistance if needed before in-branch support is withdrawn.

Santander will close 44 bank branches across the UK in 2026 and early 2027, putting 291 jobs at risk. Customers are advised to use Banking Hubs, Post Offices and digital services as branches shut.

For those who still require face-to-face help, Santander says Community Bankers will offer scheduled in-person support in affected areas. The service is intended to prioritise vulnerable customers and people who need additional assistance, although consumer groups have questioned whether capacity will match demand. Santander has said it will continue to engage with local communities, trade unions and staff representatives as the closures are rolled out. Further details on customer support measures and employment consultations are expected in the coming months as the timetable progresses.
