Washington, D.C. — U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson has revealed that Congress will not move forward with new sanctions against the Russian Federation without the full support and approval of President Donald Trump. Speaking in an exclusive interview with CBS News, Johnson emphasized that while Congress believes new restrictions are "long overdue," any legislative action requires the president's signature. As reported by The WP Times, citing the CBS News.
"I really believe that desperate times call for desperate measures," Johnson stated. "I think the sanctions against Russia are long overdue, and there is a great interest in this in Congress. We are therefore ready to work with the White House and our colleagues in the Senate to make this happen. I personally very much want to do this."
Johnson clarified that while Congress is eager to act, it cannot do so unilaterally. "The American leader will have to sign everything we do and approve it as law," he explained. The speaker emphasized the need for a collaborative "partnership," adding, "we are subordinate to the commander-in-chief."
The House Speaker also praised President Trump, describing him as a "strong and brave leader on the world stage" who has "helped achieve peace around the world and in other conflicts in a way no one before him could." Johnson expressed hope that the president "can use that same strength and approach to end this war in Ukraine."
The comments from Speaker Johnson highlight the complex political dynamics in Washington, where a bipartisan desire for tougher sanctions on Russia must navigate the approval of the executive branch. The statements also underscore the growing pressure on President Trump to take decisive action regarding the ongoing conflict.
