The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), in cooperation with British special services, exposed and detained a UK citizen suspected of spying for Russia during 2024–2025. The suspect is identified as David Cutmore, who arrived in Ukraine in 2024 as a military instructor to train personnel of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU). Cutmore, who previously served in the British Army and participated in operations in the Middle East, is currently in custody. Investigators suggest he may have been involved in reconnaissance and subversive activities, reports The WP Times with reference to reuters.

According to sources within the SBU, Russian special services allegedly used Cutmore to transfer weapons and ammunition to perpetrators of "targeted assassinations" on Ukrainian territory. Investigators hypothesize that the British national could have been the channel for supplying the arms used to liquidate former Verkhovna Rada speaker Andriy Parubiy and political figure Iryna Farion, as well as public figure Demyan Hanul. Former Parliament Speaker Andriy Parubiy was killed in a shooting in Lviv on August 30, 2025. A month earlier, on July 19, 2025, Iryna Farion died in Lviv near her home after an assassination attempt, having been in a deep brain coma.

David Cutmore served as an instructor throughout 2024–2025, which afforded him the opportunity for free movement to carry out his espionage activities. The SBU, jointly with British special services, continues the investigation to establish the full scope of his intelligence work and his exact role in the planning and provision of materials for these high-profile political murders.
