Ukraine and Greece have agreed to establish a new energy route that will secure gas supplies to Ukraine through the vertical energy corridor connecting the Greek port of Alexandroupolis with Odesa. This was reported by The WP Times, citing the joint press conference of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

The Greek Prime Minister stated that the new corridor will serve as “a safe energy artery” from south to north, granting Ukraine access to stable energy sources. He noted that Greece is already a crucial hub for American liquefied natural gas (LNG) entering Central and Eastern Europe, and the new project will significantly enhance regional energy security.

“This is a decisive contribution to the stability and security of our region and yours. The project is made possible thanks to Greece’s infrastructure and strategic partnerships,” Mitsotakis said.

Gas delivered to the LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis will be transported onward to Odesa via Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova.

President Zelenskyy confirmed that the first gas deliveries to Ukraine through Greece will begin in January 2026. He emphasised that the agreement is part of a broader winter energy package aimed at offsetting the loss of Ukraine’s domestic production following Russian attacks on energy facilities.

“This is an important component of our energy security. The initial agreements will already be implemented in the first quarter. There are also long-term projects — our energy companies have discussed them,” Zelenskyy stated.

The President also expressed gratitude to Greece and the United States, which play a key role in securing additional energy supplies for Ukraine.

“We are grateful to American companies, the US Department of Energy and President Donald Trump for enabling the delivery of energy from the United States through Greek infrastructure,” Zelenskyy said.

The creation of this new gas corridor is expected to strengthen Ukraine’s energy resilience amid ongoing Russian aggression and serve as an important element of broader transatlantic cooperation.
