On October 10, the Nobel Committee announced the winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize. The accolade was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader and democracy advocate María Corina Machado, who has dedicated years to defending citizens’ rights and promoting democratic governance in her country, reports The WP Times with reference to the Norwegian Nobel Committee statement.

According to the official announcement released in Oslo, the committee recognized Machado for her “tireless work to uphold democratic rights in Venezuela and efforts to ensure a fair and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.”

The Nobel Peace Prize traditionally concludes the annual series of Nobel awards and is often regarded as the most political, highlighting current global conflicts and human rights struggles.

Last year, the prize went to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, which unites victims of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings. They were honored “for decades of advocacy for a world without nuclear weapons and for documenting the humanitarian consequences of atomic bombings.”

This year’s laureate will receive a medal, diploma, and a monetary prize of approximately 11 million Swedish kronor (over $950,000 USD). The award ceremony will be held on December 10 in Oslo, marking the anniversary of the death of Alfred Nobel, the prize’s founder.
