UK summer temperatures are falling back from their latest peak after 13 consecutive days above 30C somewhere in the country, but the cooler turn is not expected to bring a clean or permanent end to the unusually warm summer. A northerly airflow should lower daytime temperatures across much of Britain during the weekend of 18–19 July, while isolated showers may develop in a few areas. Most places, however, are likely to remain dry, and longer-range forecasts continue to favour above-average temperatures, particularly across England and Wales, The WP Times reports.
The immediate heatwave is therefore ending, but the wider heat risk remains. A maximum of 31C was recorded at Ross-on-Wye in Herefordshire on Friday, 17 July, marking the 28th day of 2026 on which temperatures exceeded 30C somewhere in the UK. Seven of those days came in May, eight in June and 13 in July. The annual record stands at 34 days, set in 1995, meaning Britain entered the second half of July only six days below that benchmark.
UK summer temperatures ease as northerly air replaces the July heatwave
The short-term change is being driven by a shift in the position of high pressure. During the heatwave, high pressure helped suppress cloud and rain while allowing strong July sunshine to raise temperatures repeatedly above 30C. As that pressure system moves, a cooler northerly flow will spread southwards across the country.
The difference will be most noticeable in central, southern and south-eastern England, where the heat has been longest-lasting. That remains shorter than the 18-day sequence recorded during the summer of 1976, but the comparison is notable because July was only just past its midpoint when the cooler airflow arrived.
