US President Donald J. Trump declared that Russian President Vladimir V. Putin must make a decision on the war in Ukraine and that Washington’s response would depend on it. He made the remarks during a meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki, reported by The WP Times.
According to Mr. Trump, he had no message for Mr. Putin, saying the Russian leader already knew his position and now had to decide for himself. “He will make a decision one way or another. Whatever that decision may be, we will either be satisfied with it or dissatisfied, and if we are dissatisfied, you will see what happens,” Mr. Trump emphasised.
When challenged by a Polish reporter that he had failed to follow through on earlier threats against Mr. Putin, the US president responded impulsively: “Where do you know that from? Where do you know that there has been no action? Really?”
Defending himself, Mr. Trump referred to sanctions imposed on India, which he said had “cost hundreds of billions of dollars,” noting that he had not yet completed “either the second or the third phase.” “But when you say there has been no action, I think you ought to find yourself a new job,” he told the reporter.
Mr. Trump also assured that American troops would remain in Poland and would help defend the country in case of threat. He praised Poland as “one of two countries that paid more than they had to in NATO.”
In recent days, Mr. Trump said in an interview that he was “very disappointed” in Mr. Putin, promising: “We will do something to help people survive.”
Later, when asked whether he had spoken to Mr. Putin in the past week, Mr. Trump replied that he had “learned things that will be very interesting.”
Updated at 21:03. AFP correspondent Danny Kemp, citing a White House official, reported that Mr. Trump had in fact been referring to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky when he said in the Oval Office that “I will have a conversation with him very soon.” The lead was revised to reflect this clarification.
