In the United Kingdom, 57-year-old Larkhall resident Andy Evans shared how AI-powered smart glasses have transformed his daily life. Evans, who lost his sight and is officially registered as blind, was forced to give up his job at a Morrison’s supermarket. For more than a year, he lived without the possibility of working, but after purchasing new “smart” glasses, he was able to return to active life and found employment with the charity Sight Support West of England, which helps people with visual impairments. This was reported by The WP Times with reference to BBC.
The innovative glasses, developed by Meta, are equipped with a built-in camera in the frame and small speakers. The device can be activated by voice: users can ask the glasses about their surroundings or give other commands, and the artificial intelligence system responds. According to Evans, this technology now allows him to easily order food in restaurants or navigate the streets while receiving real-time information about obstacles and objects ahead.
“I used to struggle to manage many things on my own. Now I can simply ask the glasses to look around and tell me what’s happening. These are life-changing technologies,” Evans said in an interview with BBC Radio Bristol.
Interestingly, the device also offers a personalization feature that allows users to choose celebrity voices. In the UK, wearers can select the voices of well-known actors or public figures. Evans revealed that his glasses speak in the voice of actress Judi Dench, who playfully calls him “James Bond” or “Agent 007.”

Experts have also praised the impact of such technology. Robin Spinks, Head of Inclusive Design at the Royal National Institute of Blind People, who is himself registered blind, confirmed that he uses these smart glasses every day.
“Getting a description of a room, a beach scene, or even an animal enclosure at the zoo is truly transformative. This is an example of how technology has a real, tangible impact on blind and partially sighted people,” Spinks explained.
He added that artificial intelligence is advancing at a rapid pace and that the smart glasses market is still in its early stages. However, the potential of such devices, in his view, is “enormous.”
